Subject: Sink
Fandom: Illustration Friday/The Scorpio Races
Rating: PG-13
Media: H pencil colored in photoshop
Notes: I was reading the Scorpio Races when the prompt of 'sink' came up a few weeks ago. Sadly, I didn't have the time to do the picture that had popped into my head then, but the image of a 'kelpie' dragging someone down still stuck in my head. I tried to push myself again in not looking at any photo references and just doing this quick and loose.

I'm sorry with how long this post is going to be. I'm going to try and be better about updating this more frequently.

Subject: Springtime in the Hebrides
Class: Children's Book Final Projects Studio
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers with colored pencil tossed in.
Notes: Our first assignment was promotional postcards and since I had been doodling dragons, I decided to go with a cutesier version of the Hebridean black that I was sketching (based off the Hebridean black sheep). The flowers around are heather and gorse and the little Scottish boy is actually wearing the Munro tartan (my great grandma's family).

Singing dragons in the heatherCollapse )

Subject: On the Way to the Elephant's Trunk
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers with colored pencil tossed in.
Notes: This was a commission done for a call for art by the Elephant's Trunk, a new children's book store in Lexington, Massachusetts. They had a blank wall, so they asked local artists to do 12x12 artwork to put on the wall.

An elephant walks into a bookstoreCollapse )

Subject: Self-portrait
Class: Children's Book Final Projects Studio
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers with colored pencil tossed in.
Notes: The second assignment for class was to draw a self portrait. I went the fantasy route and put my two muses, Sketch and Sven-yote, into it along with making myself a pretty coat of arms.

Self portraitCollapse )

Subject: The Habu
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2/Children's Book Final Projects Studio
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers with colored pencil tossed in.
Notes: This picture was started for my Children's Book Illustration 2 class where we had to pick a folktale and do a double page spread acrylic painting. I had gotten the background done in acrylics, but couldn't get the people to come out right. So, when we had to do a 'dramatic perspective' piece, I decided to redo this in my 'style'.

Beware the snakesCollapse )

Subject: Midsummer Night Reading
Fandom: Illustration Friday/Harry Potter RPG
Rating: PG
Media: Colored pencil and marker on blue canson paper.
Notes: I did this for the Illustration Friday prompt 'Midsummer Night'. Since I had been researching it a lot anyways as an RPG character followed the 'old religion', I drew this of that character and his boyfriend doing a tarot reading out at one of the stone circles on the Hebrides.

MidsummerCollapse )

Subject: Fight the Dragon
Fandom: Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition
Rating: PG
Media: H pencil colored in Photoshop
Notes: A wedding commission of a D&D battle from their campaign. I did a bit of an experiment in coloring it on the computer, which isn't my usual way of doing things and trying to stay loose and give it the look of the drawings in the D&D books.

Roll intiativeCollapse )

Subject: Driving the Tractor
Rating: G
Media: Papercut with color pencil details.
Notes: A gift done for family in celebration of their soon to be three children.

A bit of Polish mixed with a bit of Pennsylvania DutchCollapse )

Subject: Chicken Licken
Rating: G
Media: Black ink and markers with colored pencil tossed in.
Notes: This was my submission for the Tomie dePaola Award this year. He picked an excerpt from Chicken Licken and when he said to go creative, I went all out in rethinking the concept. Or well, beyond just thinking of them as all birds.

Chicken Licken before the meteor fellCollapse )

Subject: Fireworks over Krakow
Rating: G
Media: Black ink and markers with colored pencil tossed in, watercolor background along with H pencil colored with photoshop.
Notes: In the same theme as the Scottish dragon, to start out my promotional material, I decided to send out cards for the New Year (just turned out in my favor that 2012 is the Year of the Dragon). I decided to go with Smok Wawelski for the card, celebrating New Years over Krakow.

Fireworks over KrakowCollapse )

Subject: Circus
Rating: G
Media: Black ink and markers with colored pencil tossed in, red border done in photoshop
Notes: Another gift done for family. The theme of their nursery was 'whimsy' and all the decorations they showed had that feeling of the old circus and boardwalk carnivals, so I looked over a lot of the old Barnum and Bailey posters and tried to get a good feel of it. To add to the whimsy, the actual artwork is matted on red paper and in a floating frame.

CircusCollapse )

Subject: Grounded
Fandom: Illustration Friday/Harry Potter RPG
Rating: PG
Media: H pencil with Photoshop coloring
Notes: Another experiment in coloring. For this prompt, all I could think about after awhile was the scenes with Luag and Nate from my old RPG where Luag kept feeling grounded as long as Nate's leg was touching his under the table, even before they were going out. Tried to do this quick and loose without any photo references at all and color it on the computer in sepia tones to give it that grungy Hog's Head feel.

GroundedCollapse )

Phew, that's it. I'm sure I missed a bunch, but those are the major ones at least.

Before I update with all the artwork I've been doing since the last update (there's your warning right there), I'm going to do a photo update of the week of crafting I did over the holidays. The joy of spending the week between Christmas and New Years with friends was having a bunch of wonderful craft projects set up to keep us occupied. Granted one of these projects is one that I had in the works for awhile, but the week gave me the time and patience to do all the paint layers I needed to.

Project #1: the snowflakeCollapse )

Project #2: the clockwork necklaceCollapse )

Project #3: Sprite PonyCollapse )

Subject: Micah's Day
Class: Children's Book Illustration 3
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers.
Notes: The three character vignettes for our assignment. Just a few cute little scenes of things Micah does during his day.

3 illustrationsCollapse )

Subject: Runaway Horse
Class: Children's Book Illustration 3
Rating: G
Media: Black verithin pencil and markers.
Notes: Final drawing for our last assignment where we had to make a double page spread based off of a childhood memory that displayed an emotion. I picked when a horse ran away with me during a jumping competition and ran through the rope gate.

1 color illustration & one line illustrationCollapse )

Subject: Breyer horse
Class: Introduction to Illustration
Rating: G
Media: Ink pen
Notes: For our last assignment in class we had to do a shaded drawing in pen of an object like a natural science illustration.

1 pen drawingCollapse )

Subject: Micah's Day
Class: Introduction to Illustration/Children's Book Illustration 3
Rating: G
Media: Sepia ink lines and markers.
Notes: We had to do a children's book cover highlighting a character in Introduction to Illustration, so I did a cover for the assignment I'm working on in Children's Book Illustration 3 about a friend's son and his activities during the day. The textless illustration is under the cut.

Micah's DayCollapse )

Subject: Luag MacFusty
Class/Fandom: Introduction to Illustration/Harry Potter RPG
Rating: PG
Media: Ink.
Notes: For the comic book part of the introduction to illustration class, we had to design a character and do a turn around for them. I don't have any finished recent costume work, so I decided to create an armor outfit for my RPG character Luag who is part of the Scottish clan that takes care of the Hebridean Black dragons. Fully colored drawings to come later.

3 viewsCollapse )

Subject: Ponies
Class: Introduction to Illustration
Rating: G
Media: Ink and pencil.
Notes: In class exercise for the natural drawing section of the class. Below the cut is the original pencil drawing of a Breyer horse model and then three different ink tests.

4 drawingsCollapse )

Subject: Luag and Nate sitting in a tree.
Fandom: My Little Pony/Harry Potter RPG
Rating: PG
Media: Ink
Notes: Drawing the Luag costume put the idea in my head of doing My Little Pony versions of him and his boyfriend, Nate, so during some downtime I drew them out and inked them.

It's amazing, the look in your eyes like you could save me, but you won't even try.Collapse )

Subject: Illuminated Text
Fandom: The Last Unicorn
Rating: G
Media: Lines drawn in 2H pencil, coloring in Photoshop.
Notes: A drawing I did for the Last Unicorn contest. I wanted to do it like the illuminated manuscripts for the very first paragraph of text in the book.

The unicorn lived in the lilac wood.Collapse )

Subject: My Little Dragons
Fandom: His Majesty's Dragon/My Little Pony
Rating: G
Media: Ink lines, photoshop coloring.
Notes: Done for the fanart contest for the His Majesty's Dragon series. They're My Little Pony versions of the dragons in the books with their captains drawn to look like the Megan dolls. Small spoilers for Black Powder War and Empire of Ivory.

1 colored pony, 3 line drawingsCollapse )

Subject: Velociraptors
Fandom: Jurassic Park-ish
Rating: PG
Media: 2H Pencil
Notes: During class, dinosaurs were mentioned and I realized that I hadn't drawn dinosaurs in such a long time even though I used to doodle Velociraptors all the time, so I took a shot at it again.

VelociraptorsCollapse )

Subject: In class work
Class: Children's Book Illustration 3
Rating: G
Media: 2H Pencil
Notes: A character head study we had to do first day in class and then life drawing sketches from the second day of class.

Children.Collapse )

Subject: Micah's Day
Class: Children's Book Illustration 3 & Introduction to Illustration
Rating: G
Media: 2H Pencil and sepia ink with markers
Notes: For our first assignment we had to do a 6 page character driven story with at least three vignettes and a full page illustration. I decided to do a story based on a friend's facebook updates about her son's thoughts of the day. Under the cut are pages of picture studies, attempts at character creation, color tests, and the cover for the story done for another class.

Micah's Day is always Busy!Collapse )

Subject: A Gift for Fiona
Rating: G
Media: sepia ink and prismacolor markers
Notes: The sepia lines that were applied with a brush and then the colored version of the artwork done for Fiona's first birthday.

Four picturesCollapse )

Subject: A Gift for Alex
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: G
Media: Lines drawn in 2H pencil, coloring in Photoshop.
Notes: Gift artwork done for baby Alex's birth. His dad is a big Doctor Who fan, so decided to put him properly on the geeky path early. So we have all 11 Doctors helping to spell out his name and a TARDIS inspired matte. Needless to say that the Doctor Who wiki and google image search have been my friends on this and trying to get the costumes right.

11 pieces of art, 3 pictures of the finished productCollapse )

Subject: A Gift for Fiona
Rating: G
Media: Inked line-art.
Notes: Work in progress for baby Fiona. Her parents are Polish and Irish and her dad taught English in Japan (hence the poppies, shamrocks, knotwork, and cherry tree). The animals with her are all the mascots of her parent's colleges and she's in a little blue devil's onesy.

One imageCollapse )

Subject: Figure drawing
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: The MFA does free figure drawing sessions in the museum every Wednesday, so I went down there to take advantage of the opportunity. Here are the five drawings I did that night. The model was really great and felt like she belonged in the 18th Century painting section we were in.

5 drawings in order they were drawnCollapse )

Subject: Creature
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: There was a promotional contest on DeviantArt for Splice to create a creature by combining other creatures. I entered this brute that's a combination of greyhound, angler fish, horned lizard, praying mantis, and cat.

One scary critterCollapse )

Subject: Beware the Conqueror
Class: Comic and Sequential Art Final Project Studio
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil with photoshop modifications
Notes: The first two pages of the comic with word bubbles this time. Also added gradients to the first page to get the lighting more how I pictured it in my head.

Two pagesCollapse )

Subject: Beware the Conqueror concept art
Class: Comic and Sequential Art Final Project Studio
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: Characters sketches of Sven, Will, the dragon, Alex, and Luag as well as the design for the magic circle partially seen in the first page.

5 drawingsCollapse )

Subject: Apple?
Class: Comic and Sequential Art Final Project Studio
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: Just a silly three panel comic we had to do quickly the first day of our class as an in class assignment.

Om nom nomCollapse )

Subject: I'm blue.
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: G
Media: Acrylics
Notes: Two pictures from an in class assignment. We brought in a colored piece of paper and then used light and dark paint to create the figure by putting in the bright spots and shadows. The model was a little girl, so there was quite a bit of fidgeting and shifting going on, hence the slightly wonky anatomy. Of course I didn't realize until afterwards that I managed to pick the perfect shades to make it look like I was drawing Avatar people that night...

Two paintingsCollapse )

Subject: The Habu's Repayment of Kindness concept art
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: Just a page of the sketches I did before doing the drawing for the assignment to try and get the child, baby, and snake right.

1 pageCollapse )

Subject: The Old Bear
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: G
Media: Cut paper, colored pencils, and marker.
Notes: I posted this earlier, but here is a better picture version with more drastic shadows. It's amazing what bright sunlight on a porch will do. Or at least I think it's a slightly better picture version of it.

The Old Bear SleepsCollapse )

Subject: The Habu's Repayment of Kindness
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: PG
Media: Pencil sketch
Notes: Revised pencil sketch for our last assignment. The assignment is to illustrate a two page spread of a folktale that will need to be done in acrylics while keeping in mind the culture. I picked an Okinawan folktale about a girl who saved a snake from a fire and he repaid her by looking after her baby brother when she was working and gave her a charm that would stop his kind from biting her.

One picture with a rather large snakeCollapse )

Subject: Beware the Conqueror
Class: Comic and Sequential Art Final Projects Studio
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: The first 2 1/2 pages of the 6 page comic I'm doing sans word bubbles. It's basically an intro teaser to the series, sort of like that 5 minutes of a show before the opening credits to get you into it. Text and word bubbles will be added later.

3 pagesCollapse )

Subject: The Old Bear
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: G
Media: Cut paper, colored pencils, and marker.
Notes: The assignment was to do a two page spread for a preschool level poem. I picked a Polish poem that is a bit like Ring around the Rosey or Duck, Duck, Goose, but with a 'bear' in the middle of the circle. We had to do this assignment in cut paper, so had to photograph it since it's three dimensional. Not happy with the quality of the photograph right now, so I might try scanning it in later when I have more time.

2 pictures, one with polish text, one with englishCollapse )

Subject: Mother Nature
Class: Children's Book Illustration 2
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencils, watercolors, and Prismacolor colored pencils with a few edits in Photoshop.
Notes: First assignment for the class. We were given the choice between two different texts and had the mandatory text placement with the guidelines that the text had to be on white backgrounds and no color/illustration could come within 1/4" of text and there had to be at least one child (age 6-8) in both spreads. I picked the Mother Nature poem and went with a Yellowstone wildlife theme. Under the cut is the two finished spreads followed by the thumbnails, costume sketches, and the original sketches.

6 piecesCollapse )

Subject: Equine Alphabet
Class: Children's Book Illustration 1

Subject: Creature
Class: Sourcing the Imagination
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: Our class assignment when we visited the nature lab was for every student to pick out an animal. We started sketching our animal and then we took two minute intervals of having to incorporate something from everyone else's animal into our sketch. So this is an amalgamation of about 20 animals.

One drawingCollapse )

Subject: Water Cockatrice
Class: Sourcing the Imagination
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: These are sketches that I did in order to figure out how the creature would work for my homework. This is a combination of an otter, penguin, and rockfish.

One page of sketchesCollapse )

Subject: The Horror of Directions
Class: Sourcing the Imagination
Rating: G
Media: Grayscale markers.
Notes: This was for our homework assignment of cutting pictures apart and putting them back together to create a new picture. Because of the aggravation that a friend has with Ikea directions, I cut up the directions on how to put a Billy bookcase together and then put them back together in interesting ways. This also turned out more interesting than I thought because when I lightboxed it, not only did I get the original lines from the front of the page, but the lines I hadn't noticed on the back of the page, so the black lines are the front page lines and the grey are the back page.

One drawing.Collapse )

Subject: Blast from the Past
Fandom: Dungeons and Dragons (various campaigns)
Rating: PG-13
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: After taking a few anatomy courses, I decided to go back through my old Dungeons and Dragons characters and do them over. So, as a bit of a comparison of how much my artistic style has changed, here are the original pictures of the characters that I have (of the ones I have) and the newer versions.

So, overall note is that I haven't updated this community in a LONG time, so I have quite a backlog of art that's going to be going up over the next few days hopefully. So, here's the start of that.

Subject: C is for Cat
Class: Children's Book Illustration 1
Rating: G
Media: 2H pencil
Notes: So, our first big assignment in class is to do pages for an alphabet book. This is one of the preliminary sketches of an idea that I didn't go through with, but may be interesting to do later.

C is for CatCollapse )

Subject: H is for Horse
Class: Children's Book Illustration 1
Rating: G
Media: 2H and HB pencil
Notes: This is the idea that I did go with for the project which is basically ABC horse breeds. Under the cut is the preliminary sketches for C and F and the letter page for C as well as the finished line art for C, F, G, and N.

7 drawingsCollapse )

Subject: Aroo comic
Class: Writing and Drawing Comics 2
Rating: G

Subject: Sneaky Cats
Class: Writing and Drawing Comics 2

Subject: Racoons
Fandom: Same style as the Aroo comic
Rating: G

Subject: The Colorado couple
Fandom: n/a
Rating: G
Media: Acrylics, watercolor, multiple pieces of paper, ink, colored pencil.
Notes: Hopefully I'm turning over a new leaf at getting wedding artwork done before the actual wedding. This one is for friends who met in Colorado on a snowboarding trip. She's Polish and he's Chinese/Vietnamese, so that's the reason for the red and white color scheme as well as the dragon and white phoenix/eagle motifs.
